Magnesium abundance in main sequence B-type and magnetic chemically peculiar stars

چکیده
The abundance of magnesium for a sample of 19 main sequence B-type and 41 magnetic chemically peculiar stars has been derived by spectrum synthesis analysis of the Mgii 448.1 nm line under the LTE assumption. The logarithm of the average Mg abundance for the main sequence stars is log (N(Mgii)/N(Tot)) =−4.28±0.19. Comparing magnetic chemically peculiar (Cp) and main sequence stars with equal effective temperature and gravity, one finds that the magnesium abundance tends to be lower in peculiar stars with the exception of helium rich stars where this element can be overabundant. In Cp stars with effective temperature of about 14000 K, the magnesium abundance does not depend on gravity, microturbulent velocity or rotational period. There appears to exist a correlation between the magnesium abundance and the surface magnetic field, with the stars poorest in magnesium presenting the strongest magnetic fields. In accord with the theory of magnetically controlled diffusion – which predicts a non-homogeneous distribution of magnesium over the stellar surface and stratification in the photosphere – some peculiar stars show evidence of spectral variability with the rotational phase; the respective magnesium abundances of the HgMn stars HD49606 and HD78316 depend on optical depth.

Helium in Chemically Peculiar Stars
For the purpose of deriving the helium abundances in chemically peculiar stars, the importance of assuming a correct helium abundance has been investigated for determining the effective temperature and gravity of main sequence B-type stars, making full use of the present capability of reproducing their helium lines. Even if the flux distribution of main sequence B-type stars appears to depend o...
متن کاملDiffusion and Settling in Ap/Bp Stars
Ap/Bp stars are magnetic chemically peculiar early A and late B type stars of the main sequence. They exhibit peculiar surface abundance anomalies that are thought to be the result of gravitational settling and radiative levitation. The physics of diffusion in these stars are reviewed briefly and some model predictions are discussed. While models reproduce some observations reasonably well, mor...
متن کاملCatalogue of averaged stellar effective magnetic fields . I . Chemically peculiar A and B type stars
This paper presents the catalogue and the method of determination of averaged quadratic effective magnetic fields B e for 596 main sequence and giant stars. The catalogue is based on measurements of the stellar effective (or mean longitudinal) magnetic field strengths B e , which were compiled from the existing literature. We analysed the properties of 352 chemically peculiar A and B stars in t...
متن کاملRotation and chemical abundances of Ap / Bp stars in the open cluster NGC 6475
The connection between age, rotation and chemical abundance of magnetic Ap stars is poorly understood. Using open clusters, we are able to study samples of stars that are both co-eval and co-environmental. By determining rotation and chemical abundance for Ap star members of clusters with various ages, the variations of these properties as a function of age and environment can be derived. All f...
متن کاملOn the helium stratification in the atmosphere of magnetic helium peculiar stars
High resolution spectra of the Hei587.6, 667.8 706.5 and 728.1 nm lines have been obtained to test the prediction (notably by Vauclair et al. 1991) that helium abundance should decrease with depth in helium rich stars and increase in helium weak stars. A sample of B-type main sequence stars, with expected solar abundances and non stratified atmospheres, have also been observed in order to compa...
